Scoliosis Treatment
Scoliosis is more than just a curve in the spine; it is a complex, three-dimensional change that affects your posture, breathing, and movement.
At PHYX, our physiotherapist is Schroth certified and will focus on stabilising your spine, reducing discomfort, and preventing further curvature through non-invasive, movement-based techniques.
Understanding the Curvature
Effective treatment begins with understanding the specific type and direction of the spinal curve. Scoliosis is typically categorised by the shape and location of the curve, such as a “C” curve or an “S” curve.
Our Treatment Approach
We utilise evidence-based methods, using principles from the Schroth Method, to help patients of all ages manage their spinal health.
3D Spinal Stabilisation:
We teach you how to consciously correct your posture in three planes of movement - sagittal, frontal, and transverse.Corrective Breathing:
Specialised “rotational breathing” techniques help expand collapsed areas of the rib cage to improve lung capacity and trunk symmetry.Muscle Balancing:
We focus on strengthening the “weak” side of the curve while lengthening the overactive, compressed side.Core Integration:
Building a strong functional core to support the spine during daily activities and sports.
Goals of Scoliosis Therapy
Whether you are an adolescent navigating a growth spurt or an adult managing chronic tension, our goals remain consistent:
Halt Progression:
Minimise the risk of the curve increasing over time.Pain Management:
Relieve the muscular strain caused by spinal asymmetry.Improved Aesthetics:
Enhance postural appearance and body symmetry.Functional Independence:
Ensuring you can stay active without limitations.
Note for Parents: Early intervention is key during adolescent growth phases. If you’ve noticed uneven shoulders or a tilted waistline in your child, a physiotherapy assessment can provide clarity and a proactive path forward.

Treatment goals shift based on skeletal maturity. For Adolescents, the primary focus is on halting curve progression during rapid growth spurts and improving spinal symmetry. For Adults, the focus shifts toward managing chronic pain, improving respiratory function, and maintaining postural stability to prevent “collapse” or secondary degenerative issues.

Scoliosis management is a lifelong commitment. Initially, you may see a therapist 1-2 times per week to master the specific breathing and positioning techniques. Once learned, these “corrections” should be integrated into your daily movements - how you sit, stand, and even breathe.
